Contact Lens Week: Your Guide to Happy, Healthy Eyes 👀✨

Wearing contact lenses can be a game-changer for your vision — but only if you care for them properly. Good habits can help you avoid discomfort, infections, and long-term damage to your eyes.

To celebrate Contact Lens Week, Dr. Edmiston and Dr. Siegel are sharing their top contact lens safety tips for keeping your eyes healthy and your vision crystal-clear.

🧼 Contact Lens Care Basics 🧼

  • Wash your hands first. Always use fragrance-free hand soap and water before handling your lenses.
  • No tap water, no saliva. Never rinse your lenses with tap water or use your saliva to wet them — both can introduce harmful bacteria.
  • Fresh solution daily. Replace the contact lens solution in your case every day.
  • Replace your case. Swap it out for a new one every 3 months.

💡 Pro Tips from Dr. Edmiston & Dr. Siegel 💡

  • Check the fit. Your lens should look like a bowl, not a flared saucer. (Search “taco test” if you want a visual!)
  • Follow your replacement schedule. Daily, biweekly, or monthly — stick to your prescribed schedule. Overwearing lenses can increase the risk of infection.
  • No overnight wear unless your eye doctor has approved it.
  • Skip water activities. Lakes, pools, and hot tubs can harbor dangerous microbes.
  • Keep backup glasses handy for days when your eyes need a break or if you run low on lenses.
  • Insert lenses before makeup to keep debris and makeup out of your eyes.
  • Pack extra lenses when traveling. You never know when you’ll need them.
  • Moisturize your eyes. If they feel dry, use a preservative-free artificial tear or one labeled “safe for contact lenses.”

🚩 Red Flags — See Your Eye Doctor If You Notice 🚩

  • Persistent redness, irritation, or blurred vision
  • Eye pain or sensitivity to light
  • Discharge from the eye

Our doctors agree that if something feels off, it’s always worth checking. With eyes, small problems can become big problems quickly — so we’d rather see you sooner than later.

🍣 A Final Thought from Our Doctors 🍣

Contacts are like sushi — fresh is best. If you’re not sure they’re safe, don’t put them in your eye!

Your eyes work hard for you every single day. With healthy habits — and a little guidance from your eye care team — you can enjoy the benefits of contact lenses for years to come.
