Jay Pepose, M.D., Ph.D., is the founder and active Medical Director of the Pepose Vision Institute. He also serves as Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Dr. Mujtaba Qazi is the Director of Clinical Studies at Pepose Vision Institute. He also serves as Instructor of Ophthalmology at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, as well as a cornea and vision correction surgery Instructor at the University of Missouri – St. Louis School of Optometry. He is a board-certified subspecialist in the areas of cornea and vision correction surgery. Dr. Qazi grew up in New York City where he attended Stuyvesant High School, one of the premier math and science secondary schools in the nation. His early commitment to a medical career led him to New York University’s prestigious BA-MD program. He received his Bachelor of Arts from NYU College of Arts & Science and his Medical Doctorate from NYU School of Medicine. While at NYU, he was also named a Presidential Scholar. Dr. Qazi completed his residency training in ophthalmology at Boston University School of Medicine, where he served as Chief Resident. He completed his subspecialty training in cornea and vision correction at Pepose Vision Institute, where he gained unique training and insight into various facets of laser, cornea and cataract surgery, as well as the opportunity to perform and assist in thousands of LASIK and other eye procedures. He is certified in the VISX Star S4, Bausch & Lomb Technolas, and Alcon Autonomous excimer lasers. He was the first vision correction specialist in the St. Louis region to be certified for VISX’s topography-linked customized LASIK therapy. Dr. Qazi is also one of the few area cornea subspecialists to have received training in the newest corneal transplant technology, DSAEK. As Director of Clinical Studies at PVI, Dr. Qazi is actively involved in many research projects, with special expertise in customized laser vision correction, the surgical correction of presbyopia, and visual outcomes after cataract surgery. He has authored abstracts, peer-reviewed articles, and book chapters, and has been an invited speaker at many local and national meetings. Dr. Qazi is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the International Society of Refractive Surgeons. Recently, Dr. Qazi was recognized in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, a publication featuring the most accomplished healthcare and medical professionals from around the world.

Anthony M. de Beus, MD, Ph.D., is the newest addition to Pepose Vision’s Retina Division, Handpicked by Drs. Holekamp and Pepose, Dr. de Beus is a seasoned retina subspecialist and surgeon, having practiced in Arizona for more than 20 years. He earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at Yale University, followed by his MD and Ph.D. (in Biomedical Sciences) degrees at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. Dr. de Beus completed his ophthalmology residency at Duke University and his vitreoretinal subspecialty training at the UCLA School of Medicine. He is an outstanding clinician-scientist, carrying on the tradition established by Dr. Pepose when he founded Pepose Vision Institute.

Dr. de Beus is active in international medical and surgical outreach, serving in Cameroon and Kenya for several years. He is the author of more than a dozen publications and abstracts and has participated in clinical studies sponsored by Genentech, Alcon, and Pharmacia.

Dr. de Beus shares Pepose Vision’s commitment to preserving, protecting, and restoring sight, one person at a time. PVI is extremely fortunate that Dr. de Beus and his family wearied of the Arizona sun and heat, opting for the rain and seasons of St. Louis!

Dr. Ibrahim Sayed-Ahmed is a board-certified ophthalmologist. His early commitment to a medical career led him to earn a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Alexandria University, where he graduated with honors and ranked in the top 15%. Following that, he completed his observership and research fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, with his research fellowship focused on Cornea and Ocular Surface Tumors.

Dr. Sayed-Ahmed then earned his Master’s in Vision Science and Investigational Ophthalmology from the University of Miami in 2018. After obtaining his master’s degree, he completed his ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine. Subsequently, he pursued a clinical fellowship in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Dr. Ibrahim Sayed-Ahmed was also a dedicated volleyball player for seven years on the Alexandria Sporting Club team, achieving 4th place in the national volleyball championship during the 2004/2005 season.

In addition to his medical pursuits, Dr. Sayed-Ahmed actively participates in community service work, including volunteering in several blood drives at Alexandria University Hospital. He has also dedicated his time to the Alexandria Eye Association, a charitable organization that provides funding for patients’ eye surgeries.

Dr. James Rieger is a board certified Optometrist in both Missouri and Illinois with subspecialty certifications in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular conditions, including glaucoma. Dr. Rieger earned his O.D. from the University of Missouri St. Louis College of Optometry. Following graduation, Dr. Rieger trained with eye surgeons, participating in the pre- and post-operative care of patients undergoing such surgical procedures as Laser Vision Correction, cataract extraction and eyelid surgery. As an eye care professional, Dr. Rieger has extensive background in Optometry, including prior ownership of an optical franchise for over a decade. Before coming to Pepose Vision Institute, Dr. Rieger focused on primary eye care, specialty contact lenses and the treatment of ocular diseases. With his broad experience and professional commitment, Dr. Rieger shares the Pepose Vision Institute team’s dedication to providing the highest quality care within a patient-centered environment.

Dr. Karrissa Siegel is a doctoral graduate of The University of Missouri – St. Louis College of Optometry. Dr. Siegel joined The Pepose Vision Institute in 2023, recruited personally by Dr. Pepose due to her experience and professional caring approach with patients.

Dr. Siegel is a comprehensive optometrist specializing in ocular surface and diabetic eye diseases, dry eye, glaucoma management and specialty contact lenses. Dr. Siegel manages surgical patients (cataract and refractive) both pre- and post-operatively and has extensive experience in emergent ocular care.

Dr. Siegel is a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society; the American Optometric Association and the St. Louis Optometric Society. Dr. Siegel has worked alongside a number of ophthalmologists and optometrists in her career thus far, including those in the St. Louis University hospital’s ocular emergency department.

Dr. Siegel is actively involved in community service work and has volunteered her time for a number of missionary trips in order to help the less fortunate. Dr. Siegel has a commitment to upholding the highest quality of patient care while maintaining that patients’ needs are multifaceted. Dr. Siegel believes that every single patient should be treated like family.
