Can using beauty products make a cataract worse?

Posted by: Pepose Vision Institute in Cataracts, Interesting Info on September 18, 2018

Question:
Can wearing eye makeup, perfume, hairspray, nail polish or other beauty products worsen a pre-existing cortical cataract? I was recently diagnosed and I want to know which products to avoid that could make it worse.

Answer:
Most common beauty products are very unlikely to cause or worsen cataract if used properly. Products designed to be used on the eyelids (mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow) are usually formulated to be safe for use near the eyes, but should not be placed in the eye. Improper use of beauty products, such as allowing contact with the surface of the eye, can definitely lead to irritation and even permanent damage of the eye. Always read and follow the warnings and precautions for each product. Do not allow any beauty product to touch your eyeball. As with all eye concerns, please contact us with any questions.
